This guide demonstrates the creation of IWE, a personal knowledge management system built in Rust that is open-source and converts markdown notes into an interactive knowledge network. As IWE functions as a CLI/LSP utility for local text editors, we construct a practical developer knowledge repository from the ground up. We connect wiki-links and markdown references into a directional graph and explore each primary IWE function: approximate matching via find, intelligent content fetching with retrieve, structural visualization using tree, document merging through squash, analytics with stats, and graph export in DOT format for diagrams. We then extend the CLI by incorporating OpenAI to enable IWE-inspired AI modifications: summarization, connection proposals, and task identification, all operating directly on our knowledge network. Lastly, we assemble a complete autonomous RAG workflow where an AI agent traverses the graph utilizing function-invocation tools, conducts multi-step inference across linked documents, detects missing information, and even creates new notes that integrate into the current framework.
